CommBank Yello points: how to earn them and what they are worth

How much are CommBank Yello points worth? Compare cash, gift cards, travel bookings and airline transfers, with the 2026 earning rates, tiers and fees.

By Rewards That Fly · Updated 29 October 2026 · 22 min read

Comparison of CommBank Yello points redemption values across cash, gift cards, travel bookings and airline transfers.

CommBank Yello became a points-based rewards program on 1 October 2026, replacing the bank's previous Awards points program and expanding the ways customers can earn rewards.

Members can now earn Yello points through eligible card spending, banking products and partner offers. Points can be redeemed for gift cards, cash, groceries and travel, or transferred to participating airline loyalty programs.

For travellers, the main options are CommBank Travel Booking, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity Frequent Flyer and Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

However, they do not all offer the same value.

CommBank's published redemption examples return approximately 0.33 to 0.60 cents per Yello point, while transferring to an airline can provide a different outcome depending on the conversion rate, annual fees and flight you ultimately book.

This guide explains how Yello works, what the points are worth and when the travel options may be worth considering.

At a glance

  • Yello points value: approximately 0.33c through Everyday Rewards, 0.35c as cash, 0.40c through selected gift cards and 0.60c through Travel Booking.
  • Card earning: eligible domestic spending on CommBank Smart and Ultimate cards earns 0.5 to 1.5 Yello points per dollar, depending on your Yello tier.
  • Qantas transfers: 3 Yello points to 1 Qantas Point, with a $149 annual transfer fee and eligibility restrictions.
  • Velocity transfers: 2.5 Yello points to 1 Velocity Point, with a $99 annual fee. A launch promotion offers a first-year fee waiver and a 20% transfer bonus to eligible members.
  • Qatar Airways transfers: 2.5 Yello points to 1 Avios, with no transfer fee listed in the current terms.
  • Travel Booking: points are worth approximately 0.60c each when used towards eligible flights, hotels and car hire.
  • Expiry: Yello points generally expire after two years without qualifying earning or redemption activity.

The main decision is whether to redeem within CommBank or transfer to an airline. Travel Booking offers a straightforward conversion value, while airline transfers may offer more value on selected flights but introduce additional costs and availability requirements.

What is CommBank Yello?

CommBank Yello is Commonwealth Bank's rewards program for eligible personal customers.

The program originally focused on benefits such as cashbacks, discounts and access to selected offers.

On 1 October 2026, CommBank introduced Yello points as a broader rewards currency.

Three changes are particularly important.

1. CommBank Awards points became Yello points

The previous CommBank Awards program closed on 29 September 2026.

Existing Awards points were converted to Yello points at a rate of 1:1, with conversions completed by 7 October.

Converted points can be redeemed through the new program, subject to the relevant eligibility and expiry conditions.

2. Earning extends beyond credit cards

Yello points can be earned through eligible card spending, selected banking products and participating partners.

These include home loans, insurance, term deposits, CommSec activity, travel bookings and retail offers.

Not every earning opportunity is available to every member. Eligibility and points awarded can depend on your Yello tier and the products you hold.

3. Your tier affects how many points you earn

Yello has four tiers:

Yello, Yello Plus, Yello Gold and Yello Diamond.

The higher tiers can receive better points-earning rates and additional benefits.

For example, eligible domestic spending on a Smart or Ultimate credit card earns 0.5 points per dollar at the base Yello tier and 1.5 points per dollar at Diamond.

That makes your tier an important part of assessing the value of the program.

The four CommBank Yello tiers

Your tier is determined by eligible account activity and, for higher tiers, account balances or home loan arrangements.

Tier Monthly eligible
transactions
Additional requirement
Yello 5 No minimum balance
Yello Plus 15 Hold $500 for at least 15 days during the month, unless under 26
Yello Gold 15 Hold $50,000 for at least 15 days, or have an eligible CommBank-funded home loan below $1 million
Yello Diamond 15 Hold $250,000 for at least 15 days, or have an eligible CommBank-funded home loan of $1 million or more

Source: CommBank Yello program rules, checked 24 October 2026.

Eligible transactions include qualifying card purchases, StepPay purchases, withdrawals and payments to external accounts, including BPAY.

Transfers between your own CommBank accounts generally do not count.

For the balance requirements, CommBank considers eligible transaction, savings and term deposit accounts.

How often is your tier assessed?

CommBank reviews eligibility monthly, using activity from the previous month.

Once a tier is awarded, it generally remains in place for three months.

If you fail to meet the relevant requirements for three consecutive months, your tier may be reduced.

You also need an eligible CommBank transaction account and must satisfy the program's broader eligibility conditions.

Do you need a tier to redeem points?

Yes.

Members must meet the program's eligibility requirements and hold an eligible Yello tier to redeem.

Points may remain in an account when a member is not currently eligible to redeem, but the normal expiry rules still apply.

How to earn CommBank Yello points

There are three main sources:

  1. Eligible card spending.
  2. Banking and other financial products.
  3. Travel, dining and partner offers.

The value of each earning method depends on the applicable rate and any additional costs.

Earning points through card spending

CommBank Smart and Ultimate credit cards use the same base points-earning structure, with the rate determined by your Yello tier.

Smart and Ultimate earning rates

Eligible spending Yello Plus Gold Diamond
Domestic purchases 0.5 0.75 1.0 1.5
International purchases 2.0 2.0 2.0 2.0
Dine In Deals 1.5 2.75 4.0 6.5
Travel Booking flights 10.5 10.75 11.0 11.5
Travel Booking hotels and car hire 20.5 20.75 21.0 21.5

Yello points per dollar of eligible spending. Travel Booking and Dine In Deals figures include promotional bonus earning and are subject to the applicable offer periods.

The current promotional rates run until:

  • 30 September 2027 for Travel Booking; and
  • 30 June 2028 for Dine In Deals.

Eligible card spending is described as uncapped under the current Smart and Ultimate earning structure.

However, not every transaction earns points. Exclusions include BPAY payments, cash advances, balance transfers and ATO payments.

What about older CommBank Awards cards?

Existing Awards, Gold Awards, Platinum Awards and Diamond Awards cards continue under the new Yello arrangements, although they are no longer offered to new customers.

Their ordinary earning rates are generally lower than those on Smart and Ultimate.

The current structure provides:

  • 0.5 points per dollar at Yello and Plus;
  • 0.75 points per dollar at Gold; and
  • 1 point per dollar at Diamond.

Business Awards products and the World Debit Mastercard have separate earning structures.

Check the relevant card's current terms rather than assuming the Smart and Ultimate rates apply to every CommBank card.

Travel Booking: potentially the strongest way to earn Yello points

CommBank Travel Booking is a booking platform for flights, hotels and car hire, provided through Hopper.

It is one of the more interesting parts of Yello for frequent travellers.

Under the current promotion, bookings can earn additional points on top of the card's ordinary rate.

For example, a Diamond member using an eligible Smart or Ultimate card can earn:

  • 11.5 Yello points per dollar on flights; and
  • 21.5 Yello points per dollar on hotels and car hire.

At CommBank's published Travel Booking redemption value of 0.60c per point, the additional points can represent a meaningful benefit.

Example: a $2,000 hotel booking

Suppose a Diamond member books a $2,000 hotel stay through Travel Booking at the promotional earning rate of 21.5 points per dollar.

The booking would earn:

$2,000 × 21.5 = 43,000 Yello points

At 0.60c per point, those points have an estimated Travel Booking redemption value of:

43,000 × $0.006 = $258

That is equivalent to 12.9% of the original booking price.

However, it is not necessarily a 12.9% saving.

The calculation assumes the booking qualifies for the advertised earning rate and that the points are subsequently redeemed at 0.60c.

It also does not account for differences between Travel Booking prices and fares or accommodation rates available elsewhere.

Compare the underlying price first

A hotel costing $2,000 through Travel Booking may be available for less when booked directly or through another provider.

It may also offer different cancellation terms, inclusions or loyalty benefits.

The relevant comparison is therefore:

Total booking price − realistic value of points earned

For flights, compare the same itinerary, baggage allowance and booking conditions.

For accommodation, check room type, taxes, cancellation terms and any hotel loyalty benefits that may not apply to third-party bookings.

A high points-earning rate is useful only if the overall booking remains competitive.

Dine In Deals

CommBank's Dine In Deals program is provided through EatClub.

Eligible bookings can earn additional Yello points on the amount paid after any applicable discount.

The current promotional earning arrangements run until 30 June 2028.

For members who already use participating restaurants, these can provide additional value.

However, the points should be assessed alongside the actual discount and final amount paid, rather than treated as a reason to choose a more expensive meal.

Banking products and other earning opportunities

Yello also awards points for selected banking products and activities.

The amounts vary by product and tier.

Examples from CommBank's October 2026 program information include:

Product or activity Published Yello points
Eligible new home loan settled online Up to 100,000
Eligible existing home loan arrangements 10,000–20,000
Health insurance 25,000–40,000
Life insurance 10,000–20,000
Car insurance 8,000–15,000
Contents insurance 5,000
Eligible building or combined insurance 15,000–30,000
Term deposit reinvestment 500–1,500
Eligible CommSec trading activity 1,100–2,200
Secured car loan 20,000–80,000
Eligible home energy improvement loan 10,000–40,000

Points depend on tier, product eligibility and offer conditions. Some offers are unavailable at lower tiers.

These can produce much larger points amounts than ordinary spending.

For example, a 100,000-point home loan bonus has an estimated value of:

  • $350 when redeemed as cash at 0.35c;
  • $400 through gift cards at 0.40c; or
  • $600 through Travel Booking at 0.60c.

That provides useful context, but it should not drive the product decision.

A home loan, insurance policy or personal loan should be assessed primarily on its rates, fees, coverage, terms and suitability.

The points are an additional benefit, not a substitute for comparing the underlying products.

Other Yello partner offers

CommBank also provides rotating offers through the app.

Examples announced during October 2026 included:

  • fuel discounts through bp;
  • bonus points for eligible Origin Energy plans;
  • points on participating More Telecom services;
  • DoorDash earning offers; and
  • discounts or access benefits at selected entertainment and leisure venues.

Some offers award points, while others provide a direct discount.

Availability can vary by tier and customer, and the offers have their own expiry dates.

The most useful opportunities are generally those that improve the value of purchases you were already planning.

What is a CommBank Yello point worth?

CommBank Yello points do not have one fixed cash value.

The amount you receive depends on the redemption.

CommBank publishes several standard redemption examples, which provide a useful basis for comparison.

Yello points redemption values

Redemption Points required Value received Value per Yello point
Everyday Rewards 3,000 2,000 Everyday Rewards points, equivalent to $10 in groceries 0.33c
Cash redemption 2,860 $10 equivalent 0.35c
Myer or JB Hi-Fi gift card 12,500 $50 0.40c
Travel Booking 16,667 $100 towards a booking 0.60c
Velocity Frequent Flyer 2,500 1,000 Velocity Points Depends on the flight redemption
Qantas Frequent Flyer 3,000 1,000 Qantas Points Depends on the flight redemption
Qatar Airways Privilege Club 2,500 1,000 Avios Depends on the flight redemption

CommBank published examples checked 24 October 2026. The $10 cash conversion is used to calculate the rate; the program separately states a $20 minimum cash redemption.

The first four options are relatively straightforward to compare because they have an identifiable dollar value.

Airline transfers require a separate calculation.

Cash, gift cards and groceries

Cash provides flexibility, but at approximately 0.35c per point it is one of the lower-value options.

Selected gift cards return around 0.40c per point.

Everyday Rewards returns approximately 0.33c when valued against the standard grocery discount.

For members who do not travel often, these can still be practical redemptions.

A lower cents-per-point return may be preferable to holding points indefinitely for a flight that is unlikely to be booked.

Travel Booking

Travel Booking provides the highest standard cash-equivalent value among the CommBank redemption options reviewed.

At approximately 0.60c per point, a balance of 100,000 Yello points can provide around $600 towards an eligible booking.

That does not mean Travel Booking is always the best option.

The value also depends on whether the flight, hotel or car hire is competitively priced.

A $600 points discount against a relatively expensive booking may be less attractive than using cash to purchase the same travel elsewhere.

How much are 10,000 or 100,000 Yello points worth?

The following table uses CommBank's published standard redemption rates.

Yello points Cash at 0.35c Gift cards at 0.40c Travel Booking at 0.60c
1,000 $3.50 $4 $6
10,000 $35 $40 $60
25,000 $87.50 $100 $150
50,000 $175 $200 $300
100,000 $350 $400 $600
250,000 $875 $1,000 $1,500

These are equivalent values, not necessarily amounts available for immediate redemption.

Minimum redemption amounts, increments and product availability still apply.

For example, a balance of 1,000 points may have an estimated value of $6 at the Travel Booking rate without being sufficient to make an eligible redemption on its own.

Transferring Yello points to airlines

Airline transfers are particularly relevant for Rewards That Fly readers.

CommBank currently provides transfer options to:

  • Qantas Frequent Flyer;
  • Velocity Frequent Flyer; and
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

However, the conversion ratios, fees and transfer arrangements differ.

Airline transfer comparison

Program Conversion rate Transfer method Annual transfer fee
Qantas Frequent Flyer 3 Yello : 1 Qantas Point Automatic monthly transfer $149
Velocity Frequent Flyer 2.5 Yello : 1 Velocity Point Automatic monthly transfer $99
Qatar Airways Privilege Club 2.5 Yello : 1 Avios Manual transfer No fee listed

Rates and fees checked against CommBank's October 2026 transfer terms.

The headline conversion ratio does not tell you which option is best.

The value depends on what the airline points can be used for, whether Reward Seats are available and how much the transfer fee affects the balance.

What are Yello points worth when transferred to Qantas or Velocity?

Rewards That Fly maintains monthly valuations for Qantas and Velocity Points based on actual flight-redemption comparisons.

Our current benchmarks are:

  • Qantas: 1.3c per point.
  • Velocity: 1.5c per point.

The current strong-redemption levels are:

  • Qantas: 2.1c per point.
  • Velocity: 1.7c per point.

These figures allow us to estimate the value of Yello points transferred into either program.

Airline transfer values

Transfer destination Yello points required for one airline point Estimated value per Yello point at benchmark
Qantas Frequent Flyer 3 Qantas benchmark ÷ 3
Velocity Frequent Flyer 2.5 Velocity benchmark ÷ 2.5
Qatar Airways Privilege Club 2.5 Not currently valued by RTF

For example, using our October 2026 benchmarks of 1.3c for Qantas and 1.5c for Velocity:

  • Qantas transfers return an estimated 0.43c per Yello point before fees.
  • Velocity transfers return an estimated 0.60c per Yello point before fees.

At those benchmarks, Velocity offers the stronger conversion value.

However, a Qantas Classic Reward may still be the better redemption if it provides more suitable flights or availability.

The annual transfer fees are also important.

How much do transfer fees matter?

Suppose you have 60,000 Yello points.

At the standard conversion rates, you could receive:

  • 20,000 Qantas Points; or
  • 24,000 Velocity Points.

At the October benchmarks, those balances have estimated redemption values of:

Transfer Airline points received Value at benchmark Annual fee Value after fee
Qantas 20,000 $260 $149 $111
Velocity 24,000 $360 $99 $261

This assumes the full annual transfer fee is attributable to that balance.

For someone already paying the fee and making several transfers during the year, the relevant incremental cost may be different.

Nevertheless, the example shows why a relatively small balance can be unattractive to transfer when an annual fee applies.

The same 60,000 Yello points have a published Travel Booking value of approximately $360, without an airline-transfer fee.

Qantas transfers: how they work

Qantas transfers are currently available to eligible Ultimate and existing Awards cardholders, including specified older Awards products.

Smart cardholders are not eligible for the direct Qantas auto-transfer option under the current rules.

The main conditions are:

  • 3 Yello points convert to 1 Qantas Point.
  • A $149 annual transfer fee applies.
  • Transfers occur automatically around the 25th of each month.
  • The full eligible Yello balance is transferred.
  • Points generally arrive within five business days.

Customers previously enrolled in the old CommBank Awards Qantas transfer arrangement need to opt in again under Yello.

Can Smart cardholders reach Qantas another way?

CommBank also allows Yello points to be transferred into Everyday Rewards.

The published conversion is:

3,000 Yello points = 2,000 Everyday Rewards points

Everyday Rewards normally allows members to convert:

2,000 Everyday Rewards points = 1,000 Qantas Points

On paper, combining those conversions would produce:

3,000 Yello points = 1,000 Qantas Points

That is the same headline conversion rate as the direct Qantas transfer, without the $149 annual fee.

However, we have not confirmed that Everyday Rewards points received from CommBank are eligible for onward conversion to Qantas Points under the relevant partner terms.

The two-step route should therefore be treated as unverified rather than an established alternative.

Do not transfer a substantial balance in reliance on it without confirming the treatment with both programs.

Velocity transfers: how they work

Velocity transfers will be available to eligible Yello customers from 5 November 2026, under the currently announced timetable.

Unlike the Qantas option, a particular CommBank rewards credit card is not required.

The standard conversion rate is:

2.5 Yello points = 1 Velocity Point

The annual transfer fee is $99.

Transfers occur automatically, generally around the 25th of each month.

The first transfer is scheduled for 25 November 2026.

The Velocity launch offer

CommBank has announced a launch promotion for eligible customers who opt in for the first time between 5 November 2026 and 5 May 2027.

The offer includes:

  • waiver of the first year's $99 transfer fee; and
  • 20% bonus Velocity Points on eligible transfers for six months from opt-in.

The bonus is capped at 20,000 Velocity Points.

Subject to the applicable conditions, the bonus improves the effective conversion rate.

Normally:

2,500 Yello points = 1,000 Velocity Points

With a 20% bonus:

2,500 Yello points = 1,200 Velocity Points

That is an effective rate of approximately:

2.08 Yello points per Velocity Point

At our October 2026 Velocity benchmark of 1.5c, the resulting airline points have an estimated value of approximately 0.72c per Yello point before any fees.

That is higher than the standard Travel Booking rate of 0.60c.

However, the value is only realised if the Velocity Points are subsequently used for a suitable redemption.

The bonus cap and participation dates also matter.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club transfers

Qatar Airways Privilege Club uses Avios, the same broader rewards currency used by several other airline programs.

CommBank's current transfer arrangement provides:

2.5 Yello points = 1 Avios

Unlike the Qantas and Velocity options, transfers are manual.

No annual transfer fee is listed in the published terms reviewed.

First-transfer bonus

CommBank has also announced a 25% bonus Avios offer for an eligible first transfer of at least 50,000 Yello points.

The bonus is capped at 25,000 Avios.

Importantly, the terms indicate that the first-transfer condition is used only once. Making a smaller first transfer may mean losing access to that bonus.

Is Qatar Airways better than Velocity?

Not necessarily.

Both programs provide access to Qatar Airways flights, but use different reward pricing and availability arrangements.

A Qsuite flight could require fewer points through one program and more through another, even where the aircraft and cabin are identical.

CommBank's transfer rate to Qatar is the same as the standard Velocity rate, but the fee arrangements differ.

We do not currently publish a standalone Avios valuation, so we have not assigned a dollar value to this transfer option.

The practical approach is to check the available reward and points price in both programs before transferring.

Our Qatar Qsuites with Velocity Points guide explains the Velocity side of that comparison.

One important limitation: automatic transfers

The Qantas and Velocity arrangements are not ordinary manual transfers made whenever you choose.

Both operate as automatic monthly transfers of the eligible Yello balance.

That has several implications.

First, points may leave Yello before you have identified a particular airline redemption.

Second, the points are no longer available for Travel Booking, gift cards or cash once transferred.

Third, the transfer may not coincide with a particular airline transfer-bonus promotion or reward-seat release.

The published Velocity terms also restrict members to one automatic transfer program at a time.

You can opt out of future transfers, but that does not reverse points already transferred or necessarily refund the annual fee.

For members who value keeping their rewards flexible, this is an important part of the decision.

Three examples of what a year of earning produces

The following examples show how ordinary spending translates into Yello points at different tiers.

They assume:

  • eligible domestic spending on a Smart or Ultimate credit card;
  • the relevant tier's ordinary earning rate;
  • no promotional Travel Booking or dining bonuses;
  • no banking-product or introductory points; and
  • no spending exclusions.

Annual points earned

Plus, Smart Gold, Ultimate Diamond, Ultimate
Annual eligible spending $30,000 $60,000 $96,000
Points per dollar 0.75 1.0 1.5
Yello points earned 22,500 60,000 144,000
Gift-card value at 0.40c $90 $240 $576
Travel Booking value at 0.60c $135 $360 $864
Velocity Points at 2.5:1 9,000 24,000 57,600
Velocity value at 1.5c $135 $360 $864

Airline values exclude any annual transfer fee and assume points are ultimately redeemed at our October 2026 Velocity benchmark.

These examples show how much the member's tier affects ordinary earning.

At the Plus tier, $30,000 of eligible spending produces 22,500 Yello points.

At Diamond, $96,000 produces 144,000 points.

The higher total reflects both the higher spending and the stronger earning rate.

What about transferring to Qantas?

At 3:1, the same balances would convert to:

  • 22,500 Yello points: 7,500 Qantas Points;
  • 60,000 Yello points: 20,000 Qantas Points; and
  • 144,000 Yello points: 48,000 Qantas Points.

However, the Plus example uses a Smart card, which is not eligible for direct Qantas auto-transfer under the current rules.

For the other examples, the $149 annual transfer fee must also be considered.

At our October 2026 Qantas benchmark of 1.3c, 20,000 Qantas Points have an estimated redemption value of $260 and 48,000 points approximately $624, before that fee.

The practical value may differ substantially depending on the reward ultimately booked.

Do the CommBank card fees make sense?

From January 2027, CommBank is removing the existing monthly spend-based fee waivers on Smart and Ultimate cards.

The published monthly fees are:

  • Smart: $19, equivalent to $228 annually.
  • Ultimate: $35, equivalent to $420 annually.

Both cards also provide monthly credits and other benefits.

Monthly credits

Under the new arrangements:

Smart

  • $10 monthly Travel Booking credit.
  • $10 monthly dining credit.

Ultimate

  • $25 monthly Travel Booking credit.
  • $10 monthly dining credit.
  • Additional participating benefits, including selected DoorDash and lounge arrangements.

The credits have their own conditions and expiry dates.

The important distinction is between the face value of a credit and the value a member actually receives.

A $10 dining credit is worth close to $10 to someone who would already make an eligible purchase at the same price.

It may be worth little to someone who must spend more than they otherwise would to use it.

The same applies to travel credits.

Can points alone offset the annual fee?

Using the ordinary domestic earning rate and redeeming at 0.60c per Yello point:

Yello tier Value earned per $1 spent Annual spend equivalent to Smart fee Annual spend equivalent to Ultimate fee
Yello 0.30c $76,000 $140,000
Plus 0.45c ~$50,700 ~$93,300
Gold 0.60c $38,000 $70,000
Diamond 0.90c ~$25,300 ~$46,700

These figures exclude introductory bonuses, product bonuses, monthly credits and any airline-transfer fees.

They illustrate the value of points from ordinary spending alone.

They do not establish whether a card is worthwhile, because fees, benefits, interest rates and product conditions also matter.

For a member who uses the monthly credits and other benefits, the result may be different.

What does Yello look like for actual travel?

The most useful comparison for Rewards That Fly readers is not simply how many Yello points can be earned.

It is what those points can provide when transferred into an airline program.

Our October 2026 flight searches offer several examples.

Virgin Australia domestic Business Class

On 16 October 2026, we captured a Sydney–Perth Business Reward Seat requiring:

35,500 Velocity Points + $52.02

The comparable cash fare was $1,438.

That produced a redemption value of approximately:

3.90 cents per Velocity Point

At the standard Yello conversion rate, 35,500 Velocity Points require:

88,750 Yello points

A member obtaining this reward would be using 88,750 Yello points to replace approximately $1,385.98 of airfare after accounting for reward charges.

That is equivalent to approximately 1.56 cents per Yello point, before any transfer fees.

It is substantially higher than the 0.60c Travel Booking conversion rate.

However, the comparison depends on finding a fixed-price Business Reward Seat and being willing to take that flight.

The reward was available in our October capture. It should not be assumed to remain available for other dates.

Qantas domestic Business Class

Our 16 October capture of Qantas Sydney–Melbourne Business required:

19,300 Qantas Points + $86

against a cash fare of $459.

The redemption returned approximately:

1.93 cents per Qantas Point

At the Yello conversion rate of 3:1, obtaining 19,300 Qantas Points would require:

57,900 Yello points

The flight would therefore deliver approximately 0.64 cents per Yello point before the $149 annual transfer fee.

That is only slightly above the 0.60c standard Travel Booking rate.

If the full annual transfer fee were incurred solely for that redemption, the comparison would become much less attractive.

This illustrates why the annual fee matters, particularly for smaller balances.

Qatar Airways Business Class

Qatar Airways provides another potentially attractive use of Velocity Points.

Under the current Velocity table, Business Class from Perth to Doha requires:

89,500 Velocity Points one way, plus taxes and carrier charges.

At the standard Yello conversion rate, that is:

223,750 Yello points

The required balance is substantial.

For most members, it would likely involve a combination of ordinary earning, product bonuses or promotional transfers rather than a short period of everyday card spending.

The other complication is availability. A published reward price does not guarantee that a seat can be booked.

Our Qatar Qsuites with Velocity Points guide covers those pricing and availability considerations.

What about transfer bonuses?

Transfer bonuses can improve the effective conversion rate between Yello and an airline program.

The Velocity launch offer is particularly relevant because it provides a 20% bonus for eligible transfers, subject to a 20,000-point cap.

However, automatic transfers may limit a member's ability to choose exactly when points move.

A transfer bonus is therefore best assessed as part of a planned redemption rather than a reason by itself to move a large balance.

Our points transfer bonuses guide explains the calculation and tracks the broader Australian market.

When Yello points offer good value

The program can be useful where:

  • you already qualify for a higher Yello tier;
  • eligible spending earns points without additional cost;
  • Travel Booking prices are competitive with alternatives;
  • monthly credits offset expenses you would otherwise incur;
  • an airline transfer provides a suitable fixed-price Reward Seat; or
  • a transfer promotion improves the conversion rate for a redemption you already intend to make.

The value is likely to be lower where earning requires additional spending, transfer fees absorb much of the benefit, or the available travel redemption does not suit your plans.

For travellers, the strongest opportunities are likely to come from combining competitive earning with a genuinely useful flight redemption.

However, that is not the only reasonable way to use the program.

Gift cards, cash and groceries provide more straightforward value for members who have limited interest in airline rewards.

Points expiry and other rules

Several program conditions are worth understanding.

Points expire after two years without activity

Yello points generally expire two calendar years after the last eligible points earning or redemption activity.

Eligible earning or redemption resets the expiry period.

Closing accounts, losing eligibility or opting out can affect access to the program, but does not necessarily create an immediate cash entitlement to the points.

Check the current terms before closing an account with an outstanding balance.

Additional cardholders

Points earned through eligible spending by an additional cardholder are generally credited to the primary cardholder's balance.

Cash redemption minimum

CommBank states a $20 minimum cash redemption.

The current published examples also use a $10 conversion illustration, which is useful for calculating the rate but does not mean a $10 redemption is necessarily available.

Refunds

Points earned on transactions that are later refunded can be reversed.

This may reduce the account balance and can, in some circumstances, create a negative points balance.

Gift cards and other redemptions

Gift cards are generally issued digitally and have their own conditions.

Redemptions may be final once processed.

Changes to the program

CommBank can change points rates, participating partners, redemption options and benefits under the program terms.

The value of a Yello balance should therefore be considered an estimate based on the options available at the time, rather than a fixed cash entitlement.

Frequently asked questions

Is CommBank Yello free?

There is no separate fee simply to join the Yello rewards program.

However, some products and redemption options have fees.

For example, direct transfers to Qantas currently carry a $149 annual fee, while Velocity transfers have a standard $99 annual fee.

Smart and Ultimate credit cards also have their own monthly fees.

Which CommBank cards earn Yello points?

Eligible cards include Smart, Ultimate, certain existing Awards products, participating business Awards cards and the World Debit Mastercard.

The earning rate depends on the card and, in many cases, your Yello tier.

Not every CommBank debit or credit card earns Yello points.

What are 10,000 CommBank Yello points worth?

Using CommBank's October 2026 published rates:

  • approximately $35 as cash;
  • $40 through selected gift cards; or
  • $60 towards Travel Booking.

The value may be different if points are transferred to an airline and used for a suitable flight redemption.

What are 100,000 CommBank Yello points worth?

At the standard redemption rates:

  • Cash: approximately $350.
  • Gift cards: approximately $400.
  • Travel Booking: approximately $600.

Airline transfers may deliver more or less value depending on conversion rates, fees and reward availability.

Can I transfer CommBank Yello points to Qantas?

Yes, if you hold an eligible card.

The standard conversion is 3 Yello points to 1 Qantas Point, with a $149 annual fee.

The transfer arrangement is automatic rather than a manual transfer whenever you choose.

Can Smart cardholders transfer Yello points to Qantas?

Not directly under the current Qantas transfer eligibility rules.

The direct Qantas option is available to eligible Ultimate and specified existing Awards cardholders.

A possible route through Everyday Rewards has not been fully verified and should not be relied upon without confirmation.

Can I transfer Yello points to Velocity?

Yes. Velocity transfers are scheduled to commence in November 2026.

The standard conversion is 2.5 Yello points to 1 Velocity Point, with a $99 annual fee.

An eligible launch offer provides a first-year fee waiver and a 20% bonus for six months, subject to a cap and participation conditions.

Can I transfer Yello points to Qatar Airways?

Yes.

CommBank offers transfers to Qatar Airways Privilege Club at 2.5 Yello points to 1 Avios.

Transfers are manual, and no annual transfer fee is listed under the current arrangements.

A separate first-transfer bonus may apply.

Do CommBank Yello points expire?

Yes.

Yello points generally expire after two years without qualifying earning or redemption activity.

Eligible activity resets the expiry period.

What happened to CommBank Awards points?

Existing Awards points converted to Yello points at a rate of 1:1 following the closure of CommBank Awards in September 2026.

The converted balance is subject to Yello's eligibility and expiry conditions.

What to do next

If you hold CommBank Yello points, start by checking your balance and current tier in the CommBank app.

Then compare the redemption options available to you.

For a straightforward redemption, Travel Booking currently provides approximately 0.60 cents per point, while gift cards and cash return less.

For airline transfers, check the conversion rate, annual fee and whether a suitable reward is actually available.

A Qantas or Velocity transfer can provide strong value on selected flights, but the fee and automatic-transfer arrangements mean the result will not be the same for every member.

Our Qantas Points Calculator and Velocity Points Calculator can assess the value of a specific flight redemption.

For the underlying airline-point benchmarks, see Points Valuations.

The most useful way to approach Yello is to start with the reward you want, then work backwards to the points and costs required.

A higher earning rate or transfer bonus is valuable when it improves the cost of something you already intend to book. It is less useful when the points are accumulated without a realistic redemption in mind.

Methodology and sources

Verification date

This guide was prepared using CommBank program information available on 24 October 2026.

The principal sources are the CommBank Yello program pages, FAQs, program terms and third-party transfer conditions.

The program launched on 1 October 2026. Several transfer arrangements and promotional benefits are scheduled to commence later.

Current program rules take precedence over the information in this guide.

The main sources are:

These sources provide the earning categories, tier requirements, points conversion rates, expiry rules, fees and eligibility conditions.

Credit card earning

The Smart and Ultimate earning rates are based on the published CommBank card information available on 24 October 2026.

Promotional Travel Booking and Dine In Deals earning rates have specific expiry dates.

The spending examples assume all transactions are eligible and exclude points caps, introductory offers and other restrictions unless stated.

The guide does not compare the suitability of individual credit cards.

Redemption values

Cents-per-point figures are calculated as:

Dollar value received ÷ Yello points required × 100

The cash, gift-card, Everyday Rewards and Travel Booking examples are based on CommBank's published redemption illustrations.

The separate $20 minimum cash redemption is taken from the program terms. The published $10 conversion example is used only to calculate the equivalent rate.

Airline transfer valuations

Qantas and Velocity transfer values use the conversion ratios published by CommBank and the Rewards That Fly benchmarks for October 2026.

Our current airline-point valuations are available on Points Valuations.

The value of one Yello point transferred to an airline is calculated as:

Airline-point value ÷ Yello points required per airline point

For example, at 1.5c per Velocity Point and a 2.5:1 transfer rate:

1.5c ÷ 2.5 = 0.60c per Yello point

This calculation is before annual transfer fees.

The value of airline points is an editorial estimate based on observed flight redemptions, not a guaranteed cash conversion value.

Worked flight examples

The Sydney–Perth Velocity Business and Sydney–Melbourne Qantas Business examples were captured on 16 October 2026.

The cash comparisons used the fare available for the same flight and cabin at the time.

Those prices are historical observations and do not establish current reward availability.

Everyday Rewards to Qantas

CommBank's published transfer ratio to Everyday Rewards is 3,000 Yello points to 2,000 Everyday Rewards points.

Everyday Rewards normally converts 2,000 points to 1,000 Qantas Points.

However, we have not confirmed whether points transferred into Everyday Rewards from CommBank are eligible for onward conversion to Qantas.

The potential two-step route is included as an unresolved possibility, not an established transfer method.

Travel Booking

Travel Booking is provided through Hopper.

The value of points earned on a booking depends on the eligible promotional rate and the value achieved when the points are subsequently redeemed.

Our examples assume redemption at the published Travel Booking value of 0.60c per point.

They do not establish that Travel Booking offers the lowest cash price or that every booking will earn the illustrated promotional rate.

Program changes and limitations

Yello earning rates, tiers, fees, transfer arrangements and partner offers can change.

Some offers are available only to eligible customers or require separate activation.

The guide provides factual information about published program rules and redemption values. It does not recommend financial products or assess individual suitability.

We review the guide following material program changes, including the November 2026 airline-transfer launch.

Updates are recorded in the Program Change Log.
